2019 is a BIG year for Temple Parks & Recreation… it is our 75th Anniversary! But did you know, Jackson Park is the park that started it all? Currently nominated for the 2019 Class of Lonestar Legacy Parks, Jackson Park is Temple’s oldest park. It was developed from property gifted to the City from two prominent Temple families, each with separate ties to the city’s two community hospitals at the time – Kings Daughters and Scott & White.
By the onset of World War II in the 1940s, and its resulting population boom, residents approved a massive bond issue that included $22,500 for park improvements, thus leading Temple to formally create a Parks Department to oversee park maintenance, as well as host community activities.
Later this year, the Department will celebrate our Diamond Anniversary by hosting several special community events in selected parks throughout the city.
