The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States, and is required by the Constitution to take place every 10 years. The 2010 Census will help communities receive more than $400 billion in federal funds each year. The data collected by the census also help determine the number of seats your state has in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Mail Participation Rate is the percentage of forms mailed back by households that received them. The Census Bureau developed this new measure in 2010, in part because of the current economy and higher rates of vacant housing. The rate excludes households whose forms were returned to us by the U.S. Postal Service as “undeliverable,” strongly suggesting the house was vacant. We will still follow up on all these housing units to ensure everyone is counted.

WHY SHOULD I BE COUNTED?
Congressional Representation
Information collected by the Census is first used to determine congressional representation. The number of representatives a state has in the U.S.House of Representatives is based on population. Each congressional district represents about 650,000 people. It is important to have an accurate count to ensure that local areas have adequate representation at the federal level.

Federal Funding
States and cities receive federal funding, like the Community Development Block Grant, based on information collected by the Census. Different funds can be obtained for park development, sidewalk and utility repairs, and other municipal services that help us maintain Temple's high quality of life.

City Services
The City of Temple uses Census information to estimate future municipal service needs. Information from the Census provides baseline data to project future water needs, sewer capacity, police and fire personnel, and other essential services provided by the City.

Local Growth and Development
The information collected by the Census is also valuable to our local business community. It provides information that businesses and entrepreneurs use to decide how to best leverage themselves in the Temple market. Census information about population and income are used by businesses to make decisions about locating to the City of Temple.
